Prediction: they have found or will find the Higgs Boson type particle, and some will claim that now they have found the basic building block of the universe. But it will still not be the answer.
It will not really explain the how or why of the universe. It will not contribute to a unified field theory, but at least it will be tangible, and far superior to the embarrassing big bang and the theory of everything. I just hope it doesn't lead to another round of equally embarrassing Wimps, Machos and Susy's.
For those of you who are not physics majors - don't ask.
Don't get me wrong. The Higgs Boson may very well be the smallest proto particle, but I doubt it. It may be one of the smallest quanta or self contained measureable entities, but it is more likely to be a yet smaller whirlpool with corresponding kinetic and electrodynamic properties.
I am sorry to say that for some, the search for smaller quanta is tainted by an underlying motive of finding a way of describing what is without God.
I believe that there is indeed magic in space - and it will be found to be the source of gravity, as well as the basis of electrostatic and magnetic fields. It will one day be the free green renewable energy that will serve all of human kind. Good physicists with a sincere heart of gold, like the good Professor Einstein, and a spirit of discovery like Faraday, Maxwell, and Edison will one day find it.
Here is another prediction: the break through discovery which will transform energy use, so we will no longer be dependent on oil, and so that we can safely dispose, once and for all, of our mercury filled curly bulbs, will be made by an electrical engineer--someone who is a true scientist/inventor, grounded in reality, and perhaps working in his garage. And it will have to do with pressure, outflow and sink, and will require nanotechnology to step down the power for our use.
